At New Journeys Behavioral Health in San Juan Capistrano, CA, we understand the intricate nature of grief. Our goal is to provide compassionate and comprehensive care to guide you through this challenging period

Understanding Grief and Loss

Grief is a complex, natural response to the experience of loss. It is the emotional pain and sorrow that occur when something or someone you deeply care about is taken away. While grief is most commonly associated with the death of a loved one, it can also arise from many other significant life events such as the end of a relationship, the loss of a job, the loss of financial stability, or a serious decline in health. Grief can also occur after losing an important opportunity or the loss of a cherished dream or goal. The grieving process varies for each individual and is influenced by personal, cultural, and societal factors. While grief is a normal part of life, it can feel overwhelming, and it often takes time to process and heal.

The Impact on Mental Health

Grief is not just an emotional experience; it affects the mind and body in numerous ways. People dealing with grief may experience a wide range of emotions, from sadness and anger to confusion and numbness. The mental health implications can be significant, leading to conditions such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Physical symptoms such as fatigue, changes in appetite, and sleep disturbances can also manifest. At New Journeys Behavioral Health, we offer evidence-based and holistic treatment approaches to help you navigate the complexities of grief and loss, providing a path towards healing and recovery.

Common Signs and Symptoms of Grief and Loss

Grief manifests in a variety of emotional, cognitive, physical, and behavioral ways. Each person’s experience with grief is deeply personal, and the intensity or duration of these symptoms can vary. Recognizing these signs can help individuals and their loved ones identify grief and seek the necessary support for healing.

Emotional Reactions

One of the most obvious symptoms of grief is intense emotional distress. This can include feelings of profound sadness, frequent crying, irritability, anger, and frustration. Many people also experience a sense of numbness or disbelief as they struggle to accept the loss, sometimes feeling as though they are in a state of shock.

Cognitive Reactions

Grief can cause significant difficulty in thinking clearly. Individuals may find it hard to concentrate, make decisions, or focus on tasks that would normally be easy to complete. Forgetfulness is also common, as the mind can become preoccupied with thoughts of the loss or the emotions tied to it. In some cases, people may become consumed by intrusive thoughts or memories of the person or thing they lost.

Behavioral Changes

Grieving individuals often experience behavioral shifts. Social withdrawal is common, as people may isolate themselves from friends and family, not wanting to engage in normal social activities or conversations. Their daily routines may also change; for example, they may neglect personal care, avoid places that remind them of the loss, or exhibit less motivation to complete regular tasks.

Physical Symptoms

Grief can take a toll on the body as well as the mind. Common physical symptoms include fatigue, changes in sleep patterns (either insomnia or oversleeping), and changes in appetite. People may also experience somatic pain, such as headaches, stomachaches, or chest tightness, which may result from the emotional stress of grieving.

Recognizing these signs is crucial, as it allows individuals to acknowledge the pain they are feeling and understand that it is a normal part of the grieving process. Seeking professional help, such as therapy or support groups, can aid in the healing journey and help individuals navigate the complex emotions that accompany loss. Healing is not a linear process, and people may experience waves of grief that resurface unexpectedly. It’s important to approach grief with patience and self-compassion, knowing that recovery takes time and support.

Treatment Options for Grief in Orange County

At New Journeys Behavioral Health, we offer a range of treatment options tailored to meet the unique needs of each individual. Our approach integrates traditional and holistic therapies to support comprehensive healing.

Residential Inpatient Program

For individuals experiencing severe grief that significantly disrupts their daily functioning, inpatient treatment may be the best option. Our inpatient program provides a safe and supportive environment where individuals can receive intensive care. This includes individual therapy, group counseling, and complementary therapies such as art and music therapy, meditation, and mindfulness practices. The immersive nature of inpatient treatment allows for a focused and structured healing process.

Medication and Psychiatry

In some cases, medication may be necessary to manage the symptoms of grief-related mental health conditions such as depression or anxiety. Our team of experienced psychiatrists will evaluate your needs and, if appropriate, prescribe medication as part of a comprehensive treatment plan. Medication can help stabilize mood, reduce anxiety, and improve sleep, creating a more supportive environment for therapy and other healing practices.

Counseling Services

Counseling is a cornerstone of our grief treatment program. Our licensed therapists specialize in grief and loss, providing compassionate and tailored support. Through individual counseling, you can explore your feelings in a safe space, develop coping strategies, and work through unresolved issues related to the loss. Group counseling sessions offer additional support, allowing you to share your experiences with others who understand what you are going through, fostering a sense of community and shared healing.

Aftercare Support

We also recognize the importance of ongoing support after formal treatment ends. Our aftercare programs are designed to help clients continue their recovery journey by providing regular check-ins, continued therapy, and access to support groups. This continuous support helps clients stay connected to their treatment goals and reinforces the skills they’ve learned during their time in therapy. Additionally, our alumni network offers a sense of community and belonging, allowing individuals to stay engaged with others who share similar experiences. We provide access to additional resources such as life skills coaching, job placement assistance, and housing support to help clients successfully transition back into their daily lives. Through our aftercare services, we ensure that each individual has the ongoing support necessary to maintain long-term success in managing their mood disorders.

What Our Clients Say

Our clients and families often tell us the same thing: they finally felt understood, and they got better. Read rotating Google reviews featuring star ratings and heartfelt quotes that highlight trust, compassion, and real transformation.

I was at a very low point in my life when I went to new journeys. I had lost myself in life between kids and grandkids. I didn’t know where I fit in life, I had to dig deep to find myself and learn what brings me peace, and at new journeys I was able to find me with the help of staff and peers. I will definitely choose them again if I ever lose sight of myself again.
My experience with New Journeys Behavioral Health in Orange County was one of the highest-quality mental health programs I’ve ever attended. I’ve struggled with major depression my entire life, and in most programs I felt like just a number. The 6-bed setting at New Journeys was exactly what I needed—individualized, focused care that helped me uncover long-standing trauma and truly move forward in my life.
I couldn’t be more thankful and grateful for the person who answered the phone and for the clinicians at the facility. They made all the difference.
Incredibly compassionate team, helped my son who transparently we were not sure would ever be himself again, they communicated timeframe and discharge/aftercare well
I went there when I was 17 in 2023 it was a good environment had awesome staff who seemed like they actually cared had good laughs and therapy
A previous derogatory review made here is inaccurate, and should be dismissed. My Mother needed geriatric care, not New Journeys, and the staff were 100% in support of her decision. They did not hold her money, they were kind, gentle, and compassionate to her unfortunate wrong placement at New Journeys. The staff worked hard to get her a plane ticket back across the country, provided her with transportation to the airport, and made arrangements with her for a fair and reasonable reimbursement. They only charged her for the services she received during her short stay. Mom said the facility was intimate, clean, and very nice. She was very thankful for the staff’s willingness to work with her in finding a more suitable placement-they even made referrals.
Had a great experience this was my first time getting help I’m so glad I did
The treatment that I received at New Journeys was incredible. The team was genuine, caring and insightful and the program gave me a new perspective on life, the tools necessary for healthy living and prepared and inspired me to continue my own personal journey.
Great staff, great house, great program. Definitely recommend to anyone who needs a break to get their mental health together ❤️
Such an amazing experience being here. All the staff took care of my needs with extreme care. I want to thank new journeys for the guidance towards a new journey of my own. I also would like to point out the fact of the matter of that they were the first mental health facility to get my medications correct and the clarity I have obtained is like putting on a pair of glasses for the first time in 20 years after not being able to see. I also want to express how awesome the staff is here. A few names I’d like to acknowledge who went above and beyond for me and my designed treatment is Brooke, Tess, Jacob and Emily. Although all the staff here was incredible those are the staff members that really made an awesome impact of my new journey. Thank you New Journeys for such an awesome treatment and for taking care of my needs to help me along my way on my New Journey 💪❤️💯
New Journeys was the second residential program I’ve attended. I have nothing but great things to say about New Journeys. The staff/clinical team was personable, supportive, knowledgeable and overall very helpful in my healing journey. The house was always very clean and tidy. I felt very safe and my needs were always tended to. Staff was always open to compromise on any issue or idea I had brought to their attention. Overall this program was a phenomenal experience for me and I’m beyond grateful to have had the opportunity to come here.
