Dual Diagnosis Treatment Program in Orange County

Navigating the complexities of mental health and substance use disorders can feel overwhelming, especially when they occur simultaneously. This is often referred to as a dual-diagnosis or co-occurring disorder. Understanding the importance of specialized dual-diagnosis treatment is crucial for anyone seeking comprehensive care. At New Journeys Behavioral Health in San Juan Capistrano, CA, we are dedicated to providing the highest level of personalized care to help individuals achieve lasting recovery and wellness.

Why Specialzied Dual Diagnosis Treatment Matters

Specialized dual-diagnosis treatment is essential because it addresses the unique challenges presented by co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. Traditional treatment methods often focus on one issue at a time, overlooking the interconnected nature of these conditions. Our holistic approach at New Journeys Behavioral Health ensures that each aspect of an individual’s health is considered, promoting a more effective path to recovery.

By integrating evidence-based treatment strategies with innovative therapeutic approaches, we support the whole person – mind, body, and spirit. This comprehensive care model recognizes the complexity of dual-diagnosis and aims to address all contributing factors simultaneously.

Understanding Dual-Diagnosis

Dual-diagnosis refers to the co-occurrence of a mental health disorder and a substance use disorder. It is a complex scenario where each condition can exacerbate the other, making treatment more challenging. Common mental health disorders include depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Substance use disorders may involve the misuse of alcohol, prescription medications, or illicit drugs.

Common Signs and Symptoms of Co-occuring Disorders

Recognizing the signs and symptoms of co-occurring disorders is the first step toward seeking appropriate care. Some common indicators include:

  • Persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or worthlessness
  • Intense anxiety or panic attacks
  • Significant changes in mood or behavior
  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
  • Withdrawal from social activities or relationships
  • Increased use of substances to cope with emotions
  • Unsuccessful attempts to stop using substances
  • Physical symptoms such as changes in appetite, sleep disturbances, or unexplained health issues

Understanding these signs can help individuals and their loved ones recognize the need for specialized dual-diagnosis treatment

Treatment Options for Dual Diagnosis in Orange County

At New Journeys Behavioral Health, we understand that individuals with dual diagnosis—simultaneous mental health and substance use disorders—require specialized care. Our treatment programs are designed to address the complex needs of those living with co-occurring disorders. We offer a range of treatment options that provide the support needed at every stage of recovery, ensuring a holistic, integrative approach that fosters long-term healing. Here’s an overview of the treatment options available to you:

Residential Inpatient Program

Inpatient treatment is the most intensive level of care we offer, providing a safe and structured environment where individuals can fully focus on their recovery. This level of care is ideal for those experiencing severe symptoms or requiring constant medical and therapeutic support. Clients in our inpatient program receive 24/7 monitoring, ensuring that their mental and physical health is prioritized at all times. This immersive setting eliminates external distractions and triggers, providing individuals with the space they need to work through both their mental health and substance use challenges. With access to on-site medical professionals, counselors, and support staff, our inpatient treatment program offers the highest level of care and supervision.

Medication and Psychiatry

Medications play an important role in treating dual diagnosis, particularly for managing the symptoms of mental health disorders. Our psychiatric team conducts thorough evaluations to determine the need for medication—whether for conditions such as depression, anxiety, or bipolar disorder, or to ease cravings and withdrawal symptoms from substance use. We take a holistic approach to prescribing, carefully balancing medications with other therapeutic methods. Clients also receive ongoing monitoring and adjustments to ensure the best outcomes. Psychiatric support is seamlessly integrated across all levels of care, helping individuals build long-term stability.

Counseling Services

Therapy is an essential component of dual diagnosis treatment. Our counseling services include individual therapy, group therapy, and family therapy to provide a comprehensive approach to healing. Using evidence-based techniques such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Motivational Interviewing (MI), our skilled therapists address the root causes of addiction and mental health issues. Therapy sessions help clients gain insights into their behaviors, develop healthier coping strategies, and work through unresolved trauma. Family therapy is also available to support loved ones in understanding the complexities of dual diagnosis and how they can contribute to the recovery process. Through these various therapy options, we aim to help individuals gain a deeper understanding of themselves and build the emotional resilience needed for lasting recovery.

New Journeys Behavioral Health is committed to providing personalized and compassionate care for individuals with dual diagnosis. Our team of experienced professionals understands the unique challenges associated with co-occurring disorders and is dedicated to supporting each individual’s journey to wellness. What Our Clients Say

Our clients and families often tell us the same thing: they finally felt understood, and they got better. Read rotating Google reviews featuring star ratings and heartfelt quotes that highlight trust, compassion, and real transformation.

I was at a very low point in my life when I went to new journeys. I had lost myself in life between kids and grandkids. I didn’t know where I fit in life, I had to dig deep to find myself and learn what brings me peace, and at new journeys I was able to find me with the help of staff and peers. I will definitely choose them again if I ever lose sight of myself again.
My experience with New Journeys Behavioral Health in Orange County was one of the highest-quality mental health programs I’ve ever attended. I’ve struggled with major depression my entire life, and in most programs I felt like just a number. The 6-bed setting at New Journeys was exactly what I needed—individualized, focused care that helped me uncover long-standing trauma and truly move forward in my life.
I couldn’t be more thankful and grateful for the person who answered the phone and for the clinicians at the facility. They made all the difference.
Incredibly compassionate team, helped my son who transparently we were not sure would ever be himself again, they communicated timeframe and discharge/aftercare well
I went there when I was 17 in 2023 it was a good environment had awesome staff who seemed like they actually cared had good laughs and therapy
A previous derogatory review made here is inaccurate, and should be dismissed. My Mother needed geriatric care, not New Journeys, and the staff were 100% in support of her decision. They did not hold her money, they were kind, gentle, and compassionate to her unfortunate wrong placement at New Journeys. The staff worked hard to get her a plane ticket back across the country, provided her with transportation to the airport, and made arrangements with her for a fair and reasonable reimbursement. They only charged her for the services she received during her short stay. Mom said the facility was intimate, clean, and very nice. She was very thankful for the staff’s willingness to work with her in finding a more suitable placement-they even made referrals.
Had a great experience this was my first time getting help I’m so glad I did
The treatment that I received at New Journeys was incredible. The team was genuine, caring and insightful and the program gave me a new perspective on life, the tools necessary for healthy living and prepared and inspired me to continue my own personal journey.
Great staff, great house, great program. Definitely recommend to anyone who needs a break to get their mental health together ❤️
Such an amazing experience being here. All the staff took care of my needs with extreme care. I want to thank new journeys for the guidance towards a new journey of my own. I also would like to point out the fact of the matter of that they were the first mental health facility to get my medications correct and the clarity I have obtained is like putting on a pair of glasses for the first time in 20 years after not being able to see. I also want to express how awesome the staff is here. A few names I’d like to acknowledge who went above and beyond for me and my designed treatment is Brooke, Tess, Jacob and Emily. Although all the staff here was incredible those are the staff members that really made an awesome impact of my new journey. Thank you New Journeys for such an awesome treatment and for taking care of my needs to help me along my way on my New Journey 💪❤️💯
New Journeys was the second residential program I’ve attended. I have nothing but great things to say about New Journeys. The staff/clinical team was personable, supportive, knowledgeable and overall very helpful in my healing journey. The house was always very clean and tidy. I felt very safe and my needs were always tended to. Staff was always open to compromise on any issue or idea I had brought to their attention. Overall this program was a phenomenal experience for me and I’m beyond grateful to have had the opportunity to come here.
