what exactly is Hoarding?

Understanding Hoarding: Signs and Symptoms

What is Hoarding?

Hoarding disorder involves the excessive accumulation of items, often with the inability to discard them, regardless of their actual value. This behavior can lead to cluttered living spaces that make basic activities, such as cooking, cleaning, and moving around the home, difficult or impossible. Hoarding is more than just a habit; it is a mental health condition that requires compassionate intervention and treatment.

Signs and Symptoms

Hoarding manifests through a combination of physical, psychological, and behavioral signs that can vary in severity:

Physical Signs

  • Cluttered Living Spaces: Homes may have rooms filled with items to the extent that spaces cannot be used for their intended purposes.
  • Unsanitary Conditions: Accumulation of items can lead to sanitation issues, including pest infestations and health hazards.
  • Blocked Exits and Pathways: Clutter can obstruct pathways and exits, posing safety risks.

Psychological Signs

  • Emotional Distress: Strong emotional attachments to items and intense anxiety at the thought of discarding them.
  • Indecisiveness: Difficulty making decisions about what to keep or throw away.
  • Social Isolation: Increased withdrawal from social activities and relationships due to embarrassment or fear of judgment.

Behavioral Signs

  • Acquisition of Items: Compulsive buying, acquiring free items, or even collecting discarded items.
  • Difficulty Organizing: Struggles with organizing items, leading to clutter and disorganization.
  • Inability to Discard: Resistance or inability to throw away items, regardless of their condition or necessity.

What to Expect at Our Hoarding Disorder Treatment Programs in Orange County

At New Journeys Behavioral Health, we believe in treating the whole person, not just the disorder. Our approach combines traditional evidence-based therapies with holistic practices to create a comprehensive and individualized treatment plan. Our dedicated team is committed to providing compassionate and effective care, supporting each individual on their journey to wellness.

Assessment and Personalized Treatment

When you join our hoarding disorder program, we begin by conducting a comprehensive assessment to fully understand your unique situation and challenges. This thorough evaluation includes a review of your personal history, your specific symptoms, and any underlying emotional or psychological factors contributing to hoarding behaviors. Based on the results of this assessment, we develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to your needs.

Therapeutic Interventions

Our hoarding disorder program incorporates a wide range of evidence-based therapeutic modalities to ensure that clients receive the most comprehensive care possible. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a cornerstone of our treatment, as it helps individuals identify and challenge the harmful thought patterns and behaviors associated with hoarding. We also utilize Motivational Interviewing (MI) techniques to enhance motivation and encourage commitment to the recovery process. Additionally, family therapy is an integral part of our program, providing a space for family members to understand the disorder and learn how to support their loved ones effectively.

Skill Building Workshops

In addition to therapy, our program offers practical skill-building workshops designed to equip you with essential tools for managing your daily life and maintaining progress long-term. These workshops focus on developing organizational skills that can be applied in various areas of life, from decluttering physical spaces to managing time and tasks more efficiently. We also teach decision-making techniques that help individuals navigate the often overwhelming process of sorting through possessions, allowing them to make empowered, clear choices.

Support Groups

Group therapy is an essential part of our hoarding disorder program, providing a safe, non-judgmental space where clients can share their experiences and gain valuable insights from others facing similar challenges. These support groups allow participants to connect with individuals who truly understand the emotional struggles associated with hoarding, helping to reduce feelings of isolation and shame. Through open discussion, clients are able to receive support, encouragement, and advice from their peers while also learning new coping strategies. Group therapy fosters a sense of community, reminding individuals that they are not alone in their recovery journey, which can significantly enhance motivation and personal growth.

Holistic Practices

We believe that healing from hoarding disorder involves nurturing the mind, body, and spirit. To support overall well-being and enhance the healing process, we integrate a variety of holistic therapies into our program. Mindfulness meditation is used to help individuals develop greater awareness of their thoughts and emotions, promoting emotional regulation and reducing stress. Yoga is incorporated to foster physical relaxation and body awareness, helping clients reconnect with their bodies in a positive way. Art therapy also plays a key role in our holistic approach, providing clients with a creative outlet to express emotions and experiences that may be difficult to verbalize. These practices are designed to complement traditional therapies and provide a well-rounded treatment experience that supports lasting recovery.

Aftercare and Support

Our commitment to your wellness extends beyond the completion of the treatment program. We understand that maintaining progress after treatment is just as important as the recovery process itself, which is why we provide robust aftercare services to help you sustain the positive changes you’ve made. Our aftercare program includes ongoing support, such as regular check-ins, continued access to therapy, and additional resources tailored to your evolving needs.

Incredibly compassionate team, helped my son who transparently we were not sure would ever be himself again, they communicated timeframe and discharge/aftercare well
I went there when I was 17 in 2023 it was a good environment had awesome staff who seemed like they actually cared had good laughs and therapy
A previous derogatory review made here is inaccurate, and should be dismissed. My Mother needed geriatric care, not New Journeys, and the staff were 100% in support of her decision. They did not hold her money, they were kind, gentle, and compassionate to her unfortunate wrong placement at New Journeys. The staff worked hard to get her a plane ticket back across the country, provided her with transportation to the airport, and made arrangements with her for a fair and reasonable reimbursement. They only charged her for the services she received during her short stay. Mom said the facility was intimate, clean, and very nice. She was very thankful for the staff’s willingness to work with her in finding a more suitable placement-they even made referrals.
Had a great experience this was my first time getting help I’m so glad I did
The treatment that I received at New Journeys was incredible. The team was genuine, caring and insightful and the program gave me a new perspective on life, the tools necessary for healthy living and prepared and inspired me to continue my own personal journey.
Great staff, great house, great program. Definitely recommend to anyone who needs a break to get their mental health together ❤️
Such an amazing experience being here. All the staff took care of my needs with extreme care. I want to thank new journeys for the guidance towards a new journey of my own. I also would like to point out the fact of the matter of that they were the first mental health facility to get my medications correct and the clarity I have obtained is like putting on a pair of glasses for the first time in 20 years after not being able to see. I also want to express how awesome the staff is here. A few names I’d like to acknowledge who went above and beyond for me and my designed treatment is Brooke, Tess, Jacob and Emily. Although all the staff here was incredible those are the staff members that really made an awesome impact of my new journey. Thank you New Journeys for such an awesome treatment and for taking care of my needs to help me along my way on my New Journey 💪❤️💯
New Journeys was the second residential program I’ve attended. I have nothing but great things to say about New Journeys. The staff/clinical team was personable, supportive, knowledgeable and overall very helpful in my healing journey. The house was always very clean and tidy. I felt very safe and my needs were always tended to. Staff was always open to compromise on any issue or idea I had brought to their attention. Overall this program was a phenomenal experience for me and I’m beyond grateful to have had the opportunity to come here.
I can’t thank New Journey Behavioral Health enough for the support and guidance they’ve provided. Their team has been instrumental in helping me learn how to cope with PTSD, giving me tools and strategies that have truly transformed my day-to-day life. The staff is compassionate, understanding, and incredibly knowledgeable, creating a safe space where I feel heard and supported. I finally feel like I have control over my journey to healing, and it’s all thanks to the wonderful professionals at New Journey. I would highly recommend them to anyone seeking help with trauma or mental health issues.
